Cycling is often a solo sport, but cycling relay racing is a totally different ballgame that you may be interested in.

If you’re new to cycling relay racing and are looking to connect with and support fellow cyclists, then you’re in the right place. While joining others on the road and participating in a relay race may seem intimidating at first, but the experience and time spent with your team will make you a stronger cyclist. But, because you’re new to the world of cycling relay racing, you might not know what exactly to expect — so, we’ve got your back.

Below you’ll find three things you need to know if you’re new to cycling relay racing.

Get Ready for Cycling Relay Racing

Before the race even begins, you and your teammates will need to start getting ready. Cycling is a difficult sport and is not for the faint of heart — especially when you’re riding more than 400 miles. So, the sooner you can start training, the better. Additionally, you’ll need to ensure your entire team is registered for the race and all of the other logistics are handled. You’ll also want to make sure you and your crew have a meeting where you can all get on the same page about your plan, including communication, getting lost, where to get gas, what to do if the next teammate isn’t there, where to eat and sleep, and more.

Cycling Relay Racing “Legs”

One of the cool things about having a team is that where one teammate is lacking, another probably makes up for it. This is important when assigning legs. Each leg will vary in length and terrain difficulty, so be sure to be mindful of this as you divvy out what each person will be doing. Talk to your teammates about their strengths and their weaknesses. Remember, now is not the time to be modest! Consider going by cycling and racing experience: give newer, less experienced cyclists shorter or easier stretches and assign the stronger cyclists the hillier and longer legs.

Safety and Cycling Relay Racing

While cycling relay racing is meant to be fun, safety must come first. Sharing the road with cars, trucks, and other vehicles poses serious risks, and you must make safety a priority. Unfortunately, vehicles and traffic are not the only hazards on the road — you also need to be cautious of weather, wildlife, and road conditions. Riding at night only makes things more dangerous. It is essential to take proper precautions and to ride defensively to ensure a fun and safe race.
